Downstate Alum and DMI Chair Wins Distinguished Educator Award

Yosefa Pessin, DHSc, RDMS, School of Health Professions Diagnostic Medical Imaging Associate Professor and Chair, will be announced as the winner of the Society of Diagnostic Medical Sonography (SDMS) 2022 Distinguished Educator Award at the upcoming SDMS annual conference on September 29.
The award honors exceptional educators in diagnostic medical sonography, recognizing their dedication to teaching, innovation in education, and ongoing support of students through mentorship, research, and volunteerism.
Dr. Pessin is a senior American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine member. She holds a bachelor’s degree in Diagnostic Medical Imaging from SUNY Downstate and a master’s in curriculum development and educational technology from the University at Albany. She also holds a doctorate in health science from AT Still University of Health Sciences in Missouri.
With over 25 years as a sonographer, Dr. Pessin holds registry certifications in the abdominal, OB-GYN, adult echocardiography, and vascular technology. Dr. Pessin is involved in all aspects of the DMI program’s sonography curriculum, incorporating current trends and research, clinical skills, and didactic content into the ultrasound program. Her research focuses on infection control prevention, educational technology, and simulation.
