Downstate at UHF/GME Panel on Gun Violence
Ramon Gist, M.D., Assistant Professor of Pediatrics and Director for Pediatric Critical Care Medicine, participated in the 33rd Annual Symposium on “Health Care Service in New York: Research and Practice,” sponsored by the United Hospital Fund and Greater New York Hospital Association in October. Dr. Gist, who also serves as clinical director of the Kings Against Violence Initiative, was part of a panel discussion on Cross-Sector Solutions to Address Gun Violence.
Downstate Ranks Second in Urology Residency Matches
The Department of Urology enjoys Downstate’s #2 national ranking for successful matches by medical students applying to Urology residencies, according to a study conducted by Rutgers Medical School in a recent online issue of the journal, Urology. Using several rubrics, the data was developed by examining 147 ACGME-accredited residency training programs. But by absolute number count—with 41 successful matches between 2016-2021—Downstate scored #1. The school that came closest to Downstate was UCLA, with only 30 matches.
Biking for Mental Health
The Arthur Ashe Institute for Urban Health partnered with Citibike on “Beyond the Stigma: Community Bike Ride” last month. The Sunday afternoon ride took participants through Flatbush to raise awareness on mental health and emotional wellness. The event was part of an AAIUH program that trains students to be peer counselors for mental health.
First Place Winner: Rising Dermatology Star
Kudos to PGY-2 Dermatology Resident Justin W. Marson, M.D., who won first-place in the “Rising Derm Star” competition held in conjunction with the 2022 Fall Clinical Dermatology Conference recently held in Las Vegas. As winner, Dr. Marson had the honor of presenting his research on Teledermatology and COVID-19: Adoption Patterns and Implications for Healthcare Equity to the general session and virtual attendees, reaching an audience of approximately 2,000 professionals.
Daniel M. Siegel, M.D., MS, Clinical Professor of Dermatology and former President of the American Academy of Dermatology. Dr. Siegel was also one of five experienced practitioners at the conference who shared tips for treating patients in a Learn from the Derm Experts panel. He also gave a talk on Enhancing Your Office Practice Flow with Technology.
Downstate at Precision Health Equity Symposium
Gastroenterology & Hepatology Director of Research Laura A. Martello-Rooney, Ph.D., presented on Colon Cancer Research Models and Studies to Enhance Precision Medicine for African American Patients at the inaugural Precision Health Equity Symposium 2022 held last month. The event was sponsored by Weill Cornell Medicine.
Flu and COVID Fair Success
Thank you to Mona Pervil-Ulysse, M.D., and her team for completing 1,027 flu shots and 906 COVID boosters! Kudos to the whole team and every volunteer! If you have not yet received a flu shot and/or COVID bivalent booster, please schedule a time to go get them with your local pharmacy. Protect yourself and your loved ones.
A New MHA in the House
Congratulations to the newly-minted Master of Healthcare Administration (MHA), Mohamed Nakeshbandi, M.D., Chief Quality Officer, who completed his Masters of Healthcare Administration at Columbia University. In addition to being a favored and regular go-to resource for News 12 Brooklyn, Dr. Nakeshbandi also works diligently to achieve our patient safety and quality goals and to provide better care for our patients and teams.
Breast Cancer Survivor Celebration
A special thank you and congratulations to Ruth O'Donnell MSN, RN, for her LinkedIn post, celebrating her fourth anniversary as a #BreastCancerSurvivor, and her yearly visit to the Outpatient Chemo Suite at UHD to distribute goodies to cancer patients receiving chemotherapy. She also expressed gratitude to the same caring staff who cared for her during her chemotherapy treatments.

For the second year, we celebrated #PINKTHURSDAY in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
