New Medical Student Lounge Opens in UHD
By Office of the President | Mar 6, 2023
As part of the LCME accreditation process and an example of medical education learning environment improvements, the College of Medicine created new relaxation and study spaces for its students. President Wayne J. Riley, M.D. recently cut the ribbon to the new University Hospital at Downstate Medical Student Clerkship Lounge, accessible to all Downstate medical students rotating at UHD.
The relaxing space provides a TV lounge and meditation rooms, an eating area with a refrigerator, microwave, coffeemaker, tables, work surfaces for student laptops, and WiFi access to the campus network (and coming soon: networked computers). Plenty of electrical outlets for recharging devices and proximity to hallway lockers will be made available to clerkship students for secure storage.
The new lounge is one element of a facilities upgrade program that includes new lounge furniture for the 5th and 6th floors of the Health Sciences Education Building—already in place—and a Downstate medical student clerkship lounge for Kings County Hospital Center, anticipated to open in the next few weeks. All these projects have been carried out in response to student input.
