A Message from President Riley
By Office of the President | Oct 1, 2024
Dear Downstate Community,
As we enter October, I want to highlight the importance of Domestic Violence Awareness Month and Breast Cancer Awareness Month, along with some exciting campus updates.
Downstate remains committed to raising awareness about domestic violence that affects countless lives in Brooklyn and beyond. In 2022, over 39,000 victims were reported in New York City, with Brooklyn among the most impacted boroughs. Nationally, one in four women and one in ten men will experience intimate partner violence in their lifetimes. This month is an opportunity to stand with survivors and work toward ending this cycle of abuse.
Breast Cancer Awareness Month also holds special meaning for our community. Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer, with one in eight women developing the disease during their lifetime. Despite improved survival rates, it remains the second leading cause of cancer death among U.S. women with black women facing significantly higher mortality rates than other groups. We continue to support initiatives focused on regular screenings, research, and compassionate care.
We will continue campaigns like Wear Purple Day and Pink Thursday to raise awareness of domestic violence and promote early breast cancer detection, respectively. Let’s continue these efforts, reinforcing our commitment to supporting those at risk.
In more upbeat news, I am pleased to share that Phase I of our new cafeteria is complete, and we recently welcomed diners with a “soft opening” in a bright, modern space designed for both nourishment and connection—a true gathering place for our community. Please stop by and see for yourself!
We have also installed new exterior UHD directional signage at the cross streets around campus, replacing the old blue and white directional signs that stood for decades. This modern update reflects our commitment to progress and strengthens our identity as a leader in community healthcare. Plus, they look amazing at night.
As we recognize Domestic Violence and Breast Cancer Awareness this month, let’s also celebrate the improvements on our campus that reflect our dedication to growth and excellence.
Thank you for your ongoing dedication to the health and well-being of our patients, colleagues, and community.
We will continue making Downstate a place of support, progress, caring, and hope.
