University Hospital at Downstate (UHD) is a vital resource for Brooklyn’s underserved communities, where approximately 80 percent of patients depend on government insurance for healthcare. UHD’s Free Breast Cancer Screening Project offers essential services to uninsured and underinsured women, facilitating early detection and access to necessary care.
A recent uninsured patient expressed gratitude for the compassionate support received, noting that the team was “absolutely kind, helpful, and made me feel at ease the entire process.” Betty Jung, RN, Coordinator at the Center for Community Health Promotion and Wellness, enrolled the patient in the New York State Cancer Services Program, ensuring financial assistance for ongoing screenings and follow-up visits.
The Downstate team collaborated seamlessly across departments—from initial screenings to oncology and breast surgery consultations—ensuring comprehensive care tailored to the patient’s needs.
UHD demonstrates its commitment to accessible healthcare through its state-of-the-art Breast Imaging Center in a welcoming environment. The center offers comprehensive breast imaging services, including digital mammography, breast ultrasound, and image-guided biopsies. It utilizes advanced 3D mammography technology, allowing doctors to examine breast tissue layer by layer, enhancing early detection and diagnosis.
By integrating such advanced resources with community-focused initiatives, SUNY Downstate is crucial in bridging healthcare gaps, ensuring that high-quality, compassionate care is accessible to all, regardless of insurance status.
Thank you to all who make this vital service possible for our community.
