Annual award to a Resident showing interest and proficiency in Rheumatology.

The Mahendra Somasundaram, M.D. Memorial Fund (Acct-3075)

The purpose of The Mahendra Somasundaram, M.D. Memorial Fund shall include: 1) the sponsorship of one scholarship award annually for one resident and one fellow of $1,000 each, 2) the payment of costs of travel, lodging and registration of residents, fellows, and medical students for professional educational events and 3) Grand Rounds speakers honoraria presenting on pertinent topics in Neurology for the residents, fellows, medical students, and faculty; 4) Visiting Professorship honoraria for Grand Rounds and their meetings with residents and fellows on patient presentations and discussions; 5) the cost associated with the Department Newsletter which updates alumni and former faculty on the Department of Neurology; and 6) funds for events and supplies supporting the advancement of residents, fellows and medical student education.

Annual scholarship to a second-year Resident in Obstetrics & Gynecology who has shown interest in a career in Gynecologic Oncology. If no Resident in Obstetrics & Gynecology has shown interest in Gynecologic Oncology, then a Resident in Radiation Oncology is eligible for the award for that year.

The Erich K. Lang Family Fund for Urological Research and Education (Acct-2785)

To provide financial support for SUNY Downstate COM medical students and Urology residents in academic endeavors. Specific purposes include: 1) Presentation at local, national and international meetings by residents and students, 2) Creation of a Urology Research Scholar (URS) program funded annually with $20,000 for a medical student who wishes to do clinical and translational research, and 3) Purchase educational materials deemed necessary to promote surgical educational including but not limited to practice instruments and surgical training devices.

The Glenn L Schattman, M.D. Family Scholarship Fund (Acct-2436)

The purpose of the Fund is to provide an amount, not to exceed $10,000 per year, to support the cost of tuition of one (1) medical student enrolled in the school with documented financial need per the College's Admissions committee, at the onset of the student's first year and to be continued throughout that student's full four (4) years of attendance, provided that the student remains in good academic standing. A new student will be selected each subsequent four (4) years for the Fund's award.

Scholarships to attract and retain students from backgrounds that are traditionally underrepresented in medicine and biomedical research.

Annual scholarship for outstanding 4th year minority Medical Student. Selection Criteria include: Academic Performance, Dean's Letter, Extracurricular Activities, Research Experience, and Work Ethic/Personal Qualities.

College of Nursing Giving Tree: Growing the Future of Nursing (Acct-2704)

Scholarships and awards in the College of Nursing (CON) include (award specific criteria in italics):

  • Academic Excellence Award (full-time enrollment, completion of at least 2 semesters in the CON, both academic excellence and financial need);
  • Professional Development Award (healthcare leadership excellence, support awarded for specific projects such as training and workshops);
  • Student/Faculty Research Award (research must be approved and working with CON faculty, usage of funds can include equipment, supplies, posters);
  • Community Activities/Service Award (support awarded for specific projects/activities such as cultural immersion, health fair planning/implementation for medically underserved clients);
  • Growing the Future of Nursing Award is awarded for curricular innovations, special lecturers and other opportunities/projects supporting the Mission/Vision of the CON (support awarded for specific projects/activities).

In addition to award specific criteria, all awards require enrollment in good standing in the College of Nursing.

Giancarlo Iosue Scholarship Fund for Excellence in NICU Nursing Education (2545)

The purpose of this fund is to award $10,000 annually to the tuition needs of two nurse students at $5,000 each, enrolled in the School who demonstrate financial need at the onset of their first year, second semester of attendance provided that the students remain in good academic standing.

School of Health Professions Giving Tree (Acct-3375)

School of Health Professions Giving Tree (Acct-3375) Scholarships and awards in the School of Health Professions (SOHP) include (award specific criteria in italics):

  • Academic Excellence Award (full-time enrollment, completion of at least 2 semesters in the SOHP, both academic excellence and financial need);
  • Professional Development Award (support awarded for specific projects such as training and workshops);
  • Student Emergency Fund (Limited to students experiencing adverse events [fire, natural disaster, etc.] that interfere with studies. Funds may support specific, documentable needs [e.g. replacement of destroyed text books, computer, etc.].)
  • Student/Faculty Research Award (research must be approved and working with SOHP faculty, usage of funds can include equipment, supplies, posters);
  • Community Activities/Service Award (support awarded for specific projects/activities such as cultural immersion, health fair planning/implementation for medically underserved clients).

Each SOHP Program (Diagnostic Medical Imaging, Medical Informatics, Midwifery, Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy, and Physician Assistant) may have specific scholarships and awards that may be supported by the Giving Tree.
